This is a song about feeling crushed under the weight of the modern world, drawing from both lived experiences and the struggles of cherished friends. The overall message is a rare positive one, encouraging a focus on the better days; “Let the good times roll/Until the fire’s burned to coals/May its light shine on/Long after the years take their toll”. Over Everything was one of those annoying songs that almost write themselves, with the basic framework and the full set of lyrics coming out in just one afternoon, over a single cup of coffee in the winter sunshine. A personal highlight in this recording is the instrumental after the first chorus - the interplay between Dad’s acoustic slide and Sean’s flugelhorn line brings me so much joy.
