about

Inspired by the Steinbeck novel of the same name, this is a song about the morning after a big celebration, when you’re still soaking in the afterglow of a beautiful evening, but already feeling it begin to melt away in the warm light of the new day. This song holds a dual meaning though - some lyrics were adjusted after Tarn told me about how it had always reminded her of a last bittersweet evening she had spent with a guy she’d been going through a rough breakup with. After having a similar experience myself, it became hard to deny that interpretation to the narrative. To me, this song feels like either an opener or a closer, both lyrically and musically, and I agonised for a while over which end of the album to stick it at. In the end, I decided it was too much the quintessential Sturt Avenue song to deny it its rightful place at the beginning of the album.

lyrics

Fell asleep in last night’s clothes
Next to last night’s companions, filled with last night’s hope
Fist still gripped around the bottle where I drowned all my sorrow
Well we got caught up in the moment
Now we’re stuck in tomorrow

Cigarette butts at the bottom of a brown glass bottle
And the air still thick with stale smoke
Where it uncoils like a nest of vipers
In the morning light that’s pouring in
Through the living room window

And I knew that this would happen, I knew I couldn’t stay here
But still I kinda hoped
And I’ve run far too many circles ‘round this slowly burning candle
To have not learned to let go
Well let me go
Back to Cannery Row
Oh let me go
Back to Cannery Row
