about

This is the oldest song on the album, originally written way back in 2015. It’s a tongue-in-cheek song about the incredible agony of being ordinary. While the intent of the lyrics is to poke fun at my own weird neuroses, coming to terms with the mundanity of adulthood is something that I have legitimately struggled with over the years, and as a result is definitely a key theme of the album. A highlight of this song for me is the rhythm change in the bridge - a moment that came about during an early band practice, born out of a coordinated attempt by Bryce and Isaac to throw me off of the beat. It brought me so much joy that I made them keep doing it - these organic moments of song development were an essential part of what I was hoping to achieve when putting this project together.

lyrics

The day is long
Yeah work’s a drag
And this is the worst cup of unsweetened unfiltered coffee I have ever had
But the mug warms my hands
And the view’s not bad from where I stand

At the top of the bell curve
Where you can see for miles
All the red brick houses with the cracked roof tiles
And the cars in the driveways, and the vacant smiles
My whole life, all I’ve ever wanted

Is a mortgage, a bank loan
A house that I don’t own
And a shitty desk job
That I’ll make the best of
Cause when I come home
I come home to you

Now life is dull
Yeah it started to drag
When I hit the longest consecutive grouping of bad days that I have ever had
But I won’t get mad
Cause one day I’ll have all I’ve ever wanted in my hands

Is a mortgage, a bank loan
A house that I don’t own
And a shitty desk job
That I’ll make the best of
Cause when I come home
I come home to you

And we’ll have cheese toasties in the afternoon
Yeah we’ll walk the dog someplace where the sky is blue
But above the clouds the sky’s always blue
And alone in my room, I am too
Without you.
